Spring 2011 NFARA News

Winter's Over, Get Back to the Canyon!
Join NFARA for its third annual kickoff to Spring event on May 7, 7 p.m. at the Dutch Flat
Community Center, 933 Stockton Street. The event is free and will feature a presentation on hike-in fishing on the American River by NFARA Board Member Bill Carnazzo. Come enjoy home-made desserts and beverages. Bill will discuss the canyon’s many streams, tactics that work, and practical fly selections. Bill has been back-country fly fishing for nearly 50 years, and conducts guided trips on the North and Middle Forks of the American River. Bill is also an author and magazine columnist, and is working on a book on the Middle Fork. He is a master fly tyer and was recently awarded the coveted “Ned Long Fly Tyer of the
Year” award by the Federation of Fly Fishers. When not guiding, Bill teaches fly tying classes, and onstream clinics on nymphing and pocket water fishing.

In addition to the presentation, NFARA board members will give updates on current projects and recent successes. This is a great opportunity to learn about NFARA, meet board members and discover more about the area's spectacular natural resources. There will plenty of time for questions and answers, and for socializing.

Also on hand will be cowboy poet Bob Suter who will share a few of his favorite poems with us.

About NFARA
The North Fork American River watershed is one of Placer County’s most cherished resources. It is a treasure that must be handed down to future generations intact. North Fork American River Alliance is a 501(c)3 public benefit corporation founded in 2003 to help preserve this treasure. We are an active and respected organization dealing with a range of issues. From canyon-rim development to public access issues in Blue Canyon, to off-highway-vehicle use in the Tahoe National Forest (TNF), our voice is being heard. In addition, we help reduce the burden on government by volunteering to maintain trails in
the NF.

NFARA Activities

Adopt-a-Trail: NFARA has officially adopted the Big Granite and Green Valley Trails but does work on other trails, as well. In 2010, we conducted three volunteer outings into the North Fork doing maintenance work on the Green Valley and Pickering Bar Trails, and cleaned up a large trash site on the Stevens Trail. Additional outings are planned for 2011.

Bunch Creek Rezone: The Bunch Creek Rezone was denied by the Placer County Board of Supervisors on August 24, 2010 by a three to two vote. If approved, the rezone would have converted 600 acres near Yankee Jim's Road from Timber Production (TPZ) to Residential/Forestry, and allowed construction of 7 homes on the canyon rim. The rezone would have created a precedent by encouraging speculative purchase of timber-producing land for conversion to residential development. This important decision not only preserves timber land, it helps maintain the scenic integrity of the North Fork Canyon. NFARA joined other conservation groups and local residents in opposing the rezone.

Donner Summit: NFARA and seven other organizations have developed an Economic and Conservation Vision for Donner Summit to ensure economic and environmental sustainability.
Educational Programs: NFARA routinely sponsors educational presentations and special events for the public. Last year's spring event, presenting the film Above the American, attracted over 75 people. See above for information on this year's spring event.

Lost Camp Road: NFARA successfully completed legal proceedings to keep the historic Lost Camp Road near Blue Canyon open to the public. There is still the threat that some other property owner along the road will try to block it, so NFARA needs to be vigilant and maintain adequate financial reserves in case future legal action is required.

Tahoe National Forest Vehicle Management Plan: NFARA is working with other conservation groups to present a united response to the vehicle plan. We have joined with other groups in appealing the recent decision made by TNF. We support analysis for a minimum transportation system and the prohibition of cross country travel. We do not support expansion of OHV use on our public lands.

NFARA relies on memberships and donations for financial support. If you would like to support our work, send your tax-deductible contributions to NFARA, PO Box 292, Gold Run, CA 95717, or join online.
