Summer 2010

2nd Annual Winter's Over, Get Back to the Canyon Event
NFARA's free kick-off-to Spring event, held May 1 at the Dutch Flat Community Center, was a grand success. Over 75 people attended. The band Down Home started the evening with their special blend of doo-wop, country and bluegrass music. The crowd really enjoyed the music and didn't want it to end. However, the event was just getting started.

Following introductions of NFARA Board members and a few short announcements, Producer Kelly Peterson of KVIE Channel 6 introduced the documentary, Above the American. The hour-long documentary took the audience on a spectacular aerial tour of the North, Middle and South Forks of the American River. The picture screen and new sound system were a great improvement over last year's event. The evening ended with lots of socializing around the dessert table.

A special thanks goes to Down Home and to Kelly Peterson for helping make the event a success. We look forward to doing more of these events in the future.

Support NFARA – The North Fork American River watershed is one of Placer County’s most cherished resources. It is a treasure that must be handed down intact to future generations. The North Fork American River Alliance is an all-volunteer organization founded in 2003 to help preserve this treasure. We are an active and respected organization dealing with a range of issues. From development on Donner Summit to public access in Blue Canyon to off road vehicle use in Tahoe National Forest (TNF), our voice is being heard. We need your support for continued success.

NFARA Activities

  • Bunch Creek Re-zone: Application to re-zone approximately 600 acres near Colfax from Timber Production (TPZ) to Residential Forest has been submitted to Placer County. NFARA opposes re-zone because it would take land out of agricultural use and convert it to residential use with homes built on ridge line thus impacting the viewshed and increasing fire danger. We support keeping timber production a viable part of our economy.
  • Adopt-a-Trail: NFARA has adopted the Green Valley and Big Granite Trails. Work parties are routinely organized.
  • Donner Summit: NFARA and 7 other organizations have developed an Economic and Conservation Vision to ensure economic and environmental sustainability on the Summit.
  • Educational Programs: NFARA routinely sponsors educational presentations and special events for the public.
  • Lost Camp Road: NFARA successfully completed legal proceedings to keep the historic Lost Camp Road near Blue Canyon open to the public.
  • Tahoe National Forest Vehicle Management Plan: NFARA is working with other conservation groups to present a united response to the vehicle plan. We support prohibition of cross country travel and analysis for a minimum transportation system. We do not support expansion of OHV use on our public lands.
